Yield and Quality of Vegetable Soybean Cultivars for Production in North Dakota
نویسندگان
چکیده
Vegetable soybeans (Glycine max), the same species as fi eld-dried soybeans, have similar production requirements and good market potential for commercial producers in upper midwestern United States. Five vegetable soybean cultivars were tested for yield and quality characteristics and to assess the necessity of fi eld irrigation during 2003 and 2004 in North Dakota. Cultivars of different maturity dates were evaluated for stand densities, pod production, seed weight, and marketable yield. Total marketable yields varied between the years, ranging from 5773 to 10,118 lb/acre. Lower yields in 2003 were attributed to signifi cantly lower population stands caused by poor germination conditions. ‘Envy’, the earliest maturing cultivar, produced a signifi cantly smaller seed size, while ‘Sayamusume’ produced a greater seed size than the other cultivars both years. ‘Butterbean’, ‘IA1010’, and ‘IA2062’ yielded greater percentages of threebean pods than the other two cultivars each growing season. Irrigation did not increase the marketable pod yield or the quality variables examined each season; thus it appears that rainfall during the growing season may be adequate for vegetable soybean production in this region.

Evaluation of rootstocks for watermelon grafting with reference to plant development, yield and fruit quality
The effect of grafting and post-grafting temperature on the plant development of two watermelon cultivars at transplantation and on subsequent fruit quality was studied. Watermelon cv. Sugar Baby and Crimson Sweet were self-rooted or grafted onto rootstock RS 841 F1 (Cucurbita maxima × C. moschata) or bottlegourd [Lagenaria siceraria f. clavata] (year 1), plus L. siceraria f. pyrotheca (ye...
متن کاملSoilborne pathogens / Agents pathogènes telluriques Association between genotypes of the brown stem rot pathogen Phialophora gregata and resistant and susceptible soybean cultivars in the north- central United States and Ontario
587 Abstract: The severity of brown stem rot (BSR) on soybean (Glycine max) is influenced by environment, genotype of the pathogen, and genetic resistance to BSR. BSR is caused by two genotypes of Phialophora gregata: genotype A causes pith browning and leaf necrosis, and genotype B typically causes only pith browning. The distribution of the genotypes and their interactions with resistant and ...
متن کاملNitrogen, season and cultivar affect radish growth, yield, sponginess and hollowness
The optimization of nitrogen application for root crops such as radish is important not only for yield and product quality (sponginess and hollowness) but also for the environment. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of four levels of N application (0, 150, 300 and 450 mg l-1 N) on three radish cultivars (Saxa, Red Fuoko and White Ghiaccio) grown in pots in autumn/winter (from mid-October to mid...
متن کاملAgronomic performance of two intercropped soybean cultivars
Broader environmental tolerance associated with mixed population of soybean (Glycine max Merr.) cultivars may increase soybean yield potential and play a significant role in yield stability. A field study was carried out to assess whether intercropping of two commonly used cultivars of soybean with different morphological characteristics may increase seed yield in Iran. A split-plot design was ...
متن کاملEnhancing the effect of soybean oil refinery byproducts on erythromycin production by Saccharopolyspora erythraea
Erythromycin production is clearly enhanced by the addition of vegetable oils. However, whether this positive effect is brought about by the triglyceride or non-triglyceride fraction, isnot clear. The non-triglyceride portions of the oils accumulate in the waste during the refiningprocess leaving mainly triglycerides in the refined oil. In this research, sub-fractions of soybeanoil, including le...
